Primitive modeling is one of the techniques that have been in existence in 3D modeling for quite a long time. This method is very basic, with the only problem being that it gives room for multiple challenges to occur. In primitive modeling, basic shapes such as spheres, circles, and rectangles, among others, are used to create the characters that the artist wants. With the primitive shapes available for this model, it is worth noting that it is only useful when creating basic renders such as furniture and houses since it is very hard to create complex shapes with it.
Non Uniform Rational Bspline, commonly referred to as NURBS, is another popular form on 3D modeling. In this technique, a set of equations is used to generate a mathematical curve that can be transformed into a variety of shapes. This method allows you to create shapes using the generated set of curves. These curves, commonly referred to as NURBS, have control points that can be dragged around the computer screen to alter the shapes of the curves.
Surface modeling is also another form of 3D modeling where an artist develops a spline cage profile for a 3D character. The splines will intersect with each other creating both simple and complex shapes to form a completely closed profile of the character, which is unlike the NURBS technique. This method is widely used since it allows combining 2D and 3D modeling techniques which gives more flexibility. Other methods include polygonal modeling which is used in both organic and inorganic modeling and the Sub Division modeling which is a hybrid between Polygonal modeling and the NURBS.
